ART GALLERY--PAINTINGS BY LUCY JARVIS AND HELEN WELD
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Spirit of Yarmouth Lives: Paintings by Lucy Jarvis and
Helen Weld, opens at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia Jan. 28 and
runs until March 26, 1995.

Lucy Jarvis and Helen Weld came to Yarmouth over 60 years
ago and their influence was felt by artists, the cultural
community and fisherfolk.

Jarvis and Weld experimented with line and colour. They
believed in the expressive power of colour and the freedom of
gesture and line. Because both shared an aversion to the
"tricks" of academic painting, each woman developed her own
distinctive style and approach to her subject matter.

This exhibition looks at the paintings of these two friends,
whose combined energy and enthusiasm left a lasting impression on
the people and the artistic climate of Yarmouth County and is
appreciated far beyond these geographic confines.
