NOVA SCOTIA YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL--NEW MEMBERS WANTED ------------------------------------------------------------------ If you are a young Nova Scotian between the ages of 15 and 24 and are concerned about issues facing youth, the Nova Scotia Youth Advisory Council would like to hear from you. The council, which currently consists of 12 young Nova Scotians from across the province, is recruiting new members. Working with the Nova Scotia Youth Secretariat, the council discusses youth issues and how they relate to government programs and policy. The group meets four times a year to discuss activities and acts as a sounding board for government through the Minister Responsible for Youth, Jay Abbass. "The council is an advocate for youth, providing an active voice for young Nova Scotians," said Mr. Abbass. "They have sound ideas and refreshing insights on important issues. I encourage more youth to get involved in the government decision-making process in this way." Recently, council members have been involved in issues such as AIDS in youth, education reforms, youth crime, aboriginal affairs, cigarette sales to minors, and graduated licensing. Council members have participated in a number of youth forums in recent months. "Our job is to advise the government about any issue that may effect youth," says council member Lisa Scott, a Pictou County student studying at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College. "I am concerned about issues facing people my age in Nova Scotia. Getting involved with the council is a meaningful way to tell government our concerns and ideas." To reflect the diversity of Nova Scotia's youth population, the council is especially interested in recruiting youth with disabilities, youth from a visible minority group, high school age members, and members from rural Nova Scotia. If you or someone you know is interested in joining the council, please submit a one page description of your experiences with youth issues and how you could contribute to the Youth Advisory Council.
