EDUCATION/CULTURE--AMALGAMATED SCHOOL BOARD SUPERINTENDENT
  ------------------------------------------------------------
The Strait Region becomes the province's first amalgamated
school board on Jan. 1, 1996 and John Sullivan will be its
  first superintendent.

Amalgamation coordinator George Unsworth announced today
that Mr. Sullivan was the unanimous choice of the six-member
  interview panel.

"After conducting a national recruitment campaign, we are
pleased the successful candidate combines the necessary
expertise with first-hand knowledge of the region," said Mr.
  Unsworth.

A former teacher and principal, Mr. Sullivan has been
involved with education since 1978. As both the assistant
superintendent and superintendent for the Guysborough
District School Board, he will bring solid managerial and
on-the-job experience to his new position. Mr. Sullivan is
currently the regional inspector of schools for
Colchester/East Hants, as well as the Cumberland District,
Pictou District, Dartmouth District, Halifax City and
  Halifax County-Bedford District School Boards.

The interview panel, made up of representatives from each of
the respective school boards and the Department of Education
and Culture, short-listed six candidates from the 19
  applicants and conducted detailed interviews.

Mr. Sullivan assumes his duties Jan. 1. The newly
amalgamated board will be temporarily located on the second
floor of the Provincial Building in Port Hawkesbury, and
will eventually be located at the Port Hastings School.
