PREMIER--PREMIER ANNOUNCES TEAM SOUTHWEST
  ------------------------------------------------------------
Premier John Savage today announced the formation of a
special cabinet committee to deal with economic concerns
  facing Southwestern Nova Scotia.

Members of the committee include Natural Resources Minister
Don Downe, Agriculture Minister Wayne Gaudet, Fisheries
Minister Jim Barkhouse, and Economic Renewal Minister Robbie
  Harrison.

Premier Savage said the cabinet committee's first task will
be to meet with various groups concerned with economic
  development in Southwestern Nova Scotia.

"The downturn in the fishery, reduction in ferry service,
and difficulties being encountered by some other key
industries require immediate attention. I've asked this
special cabinet committee to begin looking for answers to
  these problems."

The premier said that while the overall job picture in Nova
Scotia has brightened considerably over the past two years,
there are areas of the province that require additional
  help.

"There are no easy solutions to problems such as a decline
in the fishery. What I'm announcing today is just the first
step of a process that will include discussions with
  residents of Southwestern Nova Scotia."

The premier said the government is committed to improving
the economies of Nova Scotia's rural and coastal
  communities.

"Nova Scotians have proven time after time that they are
able to adapt to changing conditions. This is particularly
true of Nova Scotians who live in rural areas of the
  province."

The premier said the cabinet committee will visit a number
of communities and meet with business, labour and community
leaders and solicit their views on economic development.
