COMMUNITY SERVICES--NEW DIRECTOR APPOINTED

  Brian Vandervaart has been appointed director of the Senior
  Citizens Secretariat Community Services Minister Jim Smith
  announced yesterday.
  
  "Mr. Vandervaart brings a background of decisive experience
  to the secretariat" the minister said. "He has had
  responsibilities in health care, policy and planning at the
  highest level for the Canadian Armed Forces and was
  instrumental in implementing various humanitarian types of
  programs in the Canadian Forces such as the drug and alcohol
  prevention program in the Atlantic Region."
  
  Mr. Vandervaart was invested by the Governor-General as a
  serving brother in the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and
  has been cited for his volunteer community work.
  
  Mr. Vandervaart has held executive positions with the
  Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia, Canadian Association
  for Community Care, Home Care Advisory Committee, Nova
  Scotia Employee Assistance Program and the advisory
  committee of the National Respite Care Project. He is also
  involved with numerous other community endeavours.
  
  He leaves the position of executive director of Associated
  Homes for Special Care, where he has been employed for the
  past eight years. In that capacity he has developed and
  in-depth understanding and knowledge about continuing care
  and the many issues that concern seniors and their families.
