EDUCATION/CULTURE--APPRENTICESHIP BOARD HOSTS OPEN HOUSE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Board will hold a public "Open
House" at the Pictou Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College
on Mar. 19, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. This event is the first in a
series of board initiatives to gather views from across the
province on the type of training required to respond to the
constantly changing workplace. Through input from business,
industry, apprentices, parents, and students, the board is
seeking to identify the new skilled trades/occupations suitable
for apprenticeship training.

The Apprenticeship Board provides policy advice to the Minister
of Education and Culture on all apprenticeship programs in Nova
Scotia. This includes new occupations suitable to the
apprenticeship model of training. There are now 49 apprenticeable
trades/occupations in Nova Scotia, with approximately 3,300
registered apprentices in these trades/occupations.
Apprenticeship is a model of training that combines practical,
on-the-job training, with classroom training.

Education and Culture Minister John MacEachern commends the board
in its efforts to offer job training for the future to Nova
Scotians. "For Nova Scotians to be competitive and successful in
this changing world, they must be trained to meet the needs of
the day," he said. "The Apprenticeship Board is seeking to
provide Nova Scotians with that training. By participating in
public forums, such as the upcoming open house, all Nova Scotians
can help shape the economy and future of Nova Scotia."
