EDUCATION/CULTURE--PRINCIPAL APPOINTED-STRAIT AREA CAMPUS

Andrew Merlin, an experienced community college teacher and
administrator, has been appointed principal of the Nova Scotia
Community College's new comprehensive campus at Port Hawkesbury.

He assumes his duties at the same time the Port Hawkesbury campus
acquires a new name, the Strait Area Campus. The campus
consolidates the operations of the Nautical Institute Campus and
the Strait Campus at the site of the former.

Mr. Merlin had previously served as president and chief executive
officer of the North West Regional College in Battleford,
Saskatchewan for five years and prior to that he had served as
chairman of the department of business administration and
economics instructor at Grand Prairie Regional College in Grand
Prairie, Alberta for 10 years. In addition, he has served as a
lecturer in economics at the University of Victoria and as an
economic consultant with the British Columbia Department of
Economic Development in the 1970's.

A graduate of the University of Western Ontario where he received
a BA and MA in economics, Mr Merlin has been active in a number
of professional, industry and community organizations. He is a
director of the Association of Canadian Community Colleges and
served several terms as an alderman with the City of Grand
Prairie.

Jack Buckley, president and chief executive officer of the Nova
Scotia Community College said, "Mr Merlin assumes his new
position at an important stage in the development of the Strait
Area Campus. He brings to the position extensive management
experience in a number of areas, including support for community
development  and the use of technology in program delivery."

The Strait Area Campus has the dual role of providing
occupational training for residents, communities, businesses and
industries of Inverness, Victoria, Richmond, Antigonish and
Guysborough Counties, and by serving the training needs of the
marine industry in Nova Scotia and beyond. The campus offers
programs in such areas as business, computer, construction,
health and human services, hospitality and tourism, industrial
trades and technologies, electrical and electronic, natural
resources and marine as well as customized training programs.

Programs previously offered at the Strait Campus, which will
close in July, are being transferred to the new comprehensive
campus.
