LABOUR--CONSTRUCTION SAFETY AWARDS

Eleven individuals were presented with awards today at a ceremony
at Province House, hosted by the Nova Scotia Construction Safety
Association (NSCSA) and the provincial Department of Labour.
The awards, which recognize initiatives toward a safer way of
working within the Nova Scotia construction industry, were
presented by Gordon Gillis, deputy minister of labour.
Receiving construction safety officer awards were: Gary MacLeod,
Ray O'Neil, Shelley Gray, Dianne Jay and Michael Cody, all of the
Department of Labour; Jim Scanlan, of Public Works/Government
Services Canada; and Elson Lewis, of J.W. Lindsay Enterprises
Limited, Dartmouth.
Recipients of certificates of recognition were: Dale Jollimore
and John Greenlaw of Greenlaw Construction, Lawrencetown,
Annapolis County; Bob Todd of J.W. Lindsay; and Mike Hennigar of
M. Hennigar Construction, Cape Sable Island.
The establishment of a $10,000 scholarship to be presented to the
Technical University of Nova Scotia was announced at the award
ceremony. The scholarship, created in an effort to promote loss
control management within the engineering and architectural
community, is a joint effort of the construction safety
association and the department of labour.
The scholarship will consist of a first place award of $7,000 and
a second place award of $3,000 to students who best meet the
criteria established jointly by TUNS and NSCSA.
The first place award will be the largest monetary prize provided
to a TUNS student in a single year in the university's history.
