PREMIER--PREMIER ANNOUNCES CABINET REALIGNMENT
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Premier John Savage today announced a number of changes to his
cabinet resulting from the recently announced restructuring of
government.

Don Downe moves from Natural Resources to head up the new
department of Business and Consumer Services. The new department
is designed to provide business and consumers across Nova Scotia
with one-stop access to a whole range of government services.

Housing and Consumer Affairs Minister Eleanor Norrie becomes the
new minister of Natural Resources.

Gerald O'Malley, currently the minister of Supply and Services,
becomes the minister responsible for the new Science and
Technology Secretariat. The secretariat will lead government's
information technology initiatives.

In other changes, Transportation and Communications Minister
Richie Mann becomes the minister of the new department of
Transportation and Public Works. The department will consolidate
those parts of government which construct, maintain and manage
highways and other provincially-owned property.

Municipal Affairs Minister Sandra Jolly becomes responsible for
provincial housing programs as Minister of Housing and Municipal
Affairs.

The cabinet reorganization is effective April 1, 1996.

The premier said a realignment of deputy ministers will be
announced next week.
