PREMIER--JOB GROWTH GOOD NEWS
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The number of Nova Scotians employed last month increased by
8,000 over June of 1995, Premier John Savage said today. The
figures are contained in the monthly labor study conducted by
Statistics Canada.

"While any unemployment is unacceptable, the signs are
encouraging. With the exception of a very small gain in Alberta,
Nova Scotia was the only province to experience a month to month
job increase in June."

Premier Savage said in the first full month of his government's
mandate --- June 1993 --- there were 365,000 people employed in
Nova Scotia. According to Statistics Canada figures, 388,000 Nova
Scotians were employed three years later in June, 1996.

"That is an increase of 23,000 jobs since we took office. This is
particularly significant because the size of our labor force
continues to increase."

The Halifax Metro area continues to lead the province in
employment. The unemployment rate in metro during June dropped to
9.1 per cent, the lowest rate east of Ottawa.

Premier Savage said job creation continues to be a major priority
for government.
