LABOUR--SYSCO RESIGNATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The Minister Responsible for the Sydney Steel Corporation,
Manning MacDonald has accepted the resignation of its president,
Brad Bowman, effective immediately.

Mr. Bowman will continue to serve as consultant to the
corporation. In accepting his resignation, the minister said Mr.
Bowman and the board of the corporation had mutually agreed that
a change in leadership is desirable. Mr. MacDonald said Sydney
Steel's private sector partners are negotiating to take in new
partners. He said that means a major change in the circumstances
originally envisioned when Mr. Bowman was first hired.

The decision by Mr. Bowman to seek work elsewhere was at his
initiative, and a mutually agreeable settlement has been worked
out. The settlement includes a commitment by Mr. Bowman to
continue serving Sysco as a consultant. Mr. MacDonald said James
Rudderham, senior vice-president and corporate secretary, has
been appointed acting president of Sydney Steel pending the
appointment of a permanent successor to Mr. Bowman.
