COMMUNITY SERVICES--CONFERENCE FOCUSES ON PREVENTING CHILD ABUSE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
"Prevention of Child Abuse" is the focus of a conference in
Halifax next week sponsored by Partnerships in Action, a
coalition of child and family advocacy organizations. The
conference is taking place on the Oct. 3 and 4, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
at the Mother House of Mount Saint Vincent University.

The purpose of the two-day event is to allow professionals
working with children and their families the opportunity to learn
from other disciplines and discuss ways of preventing violence.
Participants will discuss ways of working with families and
community organizations to ensure children will not be exposed to
physical abuse and other forms of violence in the home.
Partnerships and cooperation between organizations and
professionals will be emphasised.

The conference will include two keynote addresses: Kathy Lynn, a
parenting educator, author and respected child advocate, will
discuss children's need to be challenged. Dr. Susan Wilson, a
clinical psychologist, will discuss the impact of children
witnessing violence.

A series of workshops and panel discussions are also being
presented. The emphasis is on the importance of preventing child
abuse.
