ECONOMIC RENEWAL--WORKING TOGETHER KEY TO SOUTHWEST NOVA'S FUTURE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Economic Renewal Minister Richie Mann stressed the need for
partnership at all levels, during a meeting in Yarmouth on
Tuesday to discuss the future of southwest Nova. He said working
together was essential to make the most of opportunities and to
find solutions to difficulties in the region.

Members of the Yarmouth and Shelburne area's business community
and municipal leaders met with provincial government
representatives Tuesday evening. They shared concerns, plans and
ideas for economic development in southwest Nova Scotia.

The meeting was co-chaired by Human Resources Minister Allister
Surette and Rod Rose, chairman of the Southwest Shore Development
Authority (SWSDA). Mr. Mann answered questions on the local and
provincial economies, and on specific issues faced by communities
in the area.

Topics discussed included aquaculture, tourism marketing, the
Waterfront Program, federal funding cuts and transfers of federal
facilities to communities, transportation difficulties, and
business opportunities for the region.

"To face problems and to make the most of chances here, we need
partnerships between all stakeholders, local, provincial and
federal governments, and the local communities," said Mr. Mann
"We have to use the strength of Team Southwest Nova and the SWSDA
to create jobs."

Local businesswoman Irene d'Entremont agreed that partnerships
between local business and government often provide the best
solution to economic difficulties.

"More money is not always the solution. When you're working
together as a team, things can happen," she said. "The minister
took time to come to southwest Nova Scotia and he was open about
how the Economic Renewal Agency can work with the community. I
felt that if I had a suggestion or an idea, the ERA would listen
and help in any way it could," she said.

Mr. Mann followed the Yarmouth meeting with meetings in Shelburne
Park and at Shelburne Marine today.
