FINANCE--CIGARETTE PRICES RAISED TO COMBAT YOUTH SMOKING
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The Nova Scotia government and the federal government are teaming
up to crack down on youth smoking. Finance Minister Bill Gillis
announced in the legislature today, that as of midnight tonight,
the cost of cigarettes will be going up by $1.50 per carton.

Three other provincial provinces --- Ontario, New Brunswick and
Quebec --- are joining the federal government in this initiative.
The extra tax means an increase of 70 cents to the province and
70 cents to the federal government. The remainder of the increase
is due to the GST.

The Nova Scotia government is expected to collect $1.75 million
more in revenue for the remainder of the fiscal year.
