HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION--HUMAN RIGHTS DAY ACTIVITIES
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The 48th anniversary of the United Nations' Universal Declaration
of Human Rights will be celebrated jointly by the Nova Scotia
Human Rights Commission, the Canadian Human Rights Commission and
the Court of Canadian Citizenship on Dec. 10, Human Rights Day.

Justice Minister Jay Abbass, minister in charge of the
administration of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Act, representing
Premier John Savage, and Joseph B. Marshall, president of the
Union of Nova Scotia Indians, will raise the United Nations flag
outside St. Patrick's-Alexandra School, 2277 Maitland Street,
Halifax, at 10 a.m.

This will be followed by a proclamation ceremony including a
Court of Canadian Citizenship at the Community YMCA, 2269
Gottingen Street, Halifax, at 10:15 a.m.

Since 1996 is the International Year for the Eradication of
Poverty, those in attendance are asked to make donations to the
Metro Food Bank Society as a continuation of the food drive
promoted by the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission and the
Canadian Human Rights Commission.

The minister will welcome guests and reaffirm the province's
commitment to human rights by reading a proclamation signed by
the premier, urging all Nova Scotians to observe the
International Year for the Eradication of Poverty and to promote
human rights.

The minister will also present a human rights award to the Metro
Food Bank Society for its humanitarian efforts towards the relief
of hunger in the Metro area.

A. Wayne MacKay, executive director, Nova Scotia Human Rights
Commission, said: "There are clear links between hunger, poverty
and human rights as rights have little practical meaning, if you
have no food in your stomach."

The ceremony will include a performance by the Cornwallis Street
Baptist Church children's choir.
