As of midnight Wednesday, Dec. 18, the Department of Justice has
reported there were 623 demands, or completed claims for
compensation filed, and 834 notices of claims filed, related to
abuse in provincially-run facilities.

Those who have filed a notice of a claim with the department have
six months in which to complete the claim. Once the completed
claim is filed with the department, the department will respond
to that claim within 120 days.

For those individuals who had file reviews previously scheduled,
that process will resume in February, 1997. Those who received
offers from the province prior to Nov. 1, 1996, may accept those
offers immediately.

"Given the numbers that have come forward, it is clear that
people have faith in this process," said Justice Minister Jay
Abbass. "We are committed to compensating those who were abused
in a compassionate and confidential manner."
