InNOVAcorp--DESIGNING FOR SUCCESS AND PROFIT CONFERENCE
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Using design to ensure success and profit is the topic of a
conference being hosted tomorrow and Friday (March 20-21) in
Halifax by InNOVAcorp - Nova Scotia Innovation Corporation, the
Centre for International Business Studies (CIBS) and Design in
Business-Nova Scotia (DBNS).

The conference, "Designing for Success in World Markets", will
feature case studies on effective design from the Atlantic region
and a keynote address by Peter Lawrence, chair, Corporate Design
Foundation, Boston. It is being held at the Westin Nova Scotian.

DBNS represents design professionals and associations in the
province and has been heavily involved this past year in the
development of a provincial design strategy. The conference will
provide a medium to discuss the new strategy.

"We hope this conference will begin to make every business
professional aware of the impact of design throughout any
project," said Frank Fox, professor at the Nova Scotia College of
Art and Design (NSCAD) and DBNS member.

Organizers of the conference stress that design, like business
marketing, when used strategically, can be a powerful tool for
today's business. Conference organizer Dr. Don Patton believes
the communication of the recently drafted design strategy is the
first step in educating business on the importance of design for
our companies to remain globally competitive. He looks to keynote
speaker Peter Lawrence as example. In 1985 Lawrence founded the
Corporate Design Foundation in Boston "to improve the quality of
life and effectiveness of organizations through design".

"InNOVAcorp offers a comprehensive set of resources to companies
needing assistance to commercialize their technology-based
products and services," said David Roach, manager of technology
commercialization at InNOVAcorp. "We want to provide companies
with as much information as possible so they can make the best
decisions for their business. We see the value in considering
design throughout the commercialization process."

Other conference highlights include representatives from Bryston
Limited, Nortel, Pratt & Whitney and Xerox providing case studies
on the role of design for their companies.
