PREMIER--EXECUTIVE COUNCIL-CLERK APPOINTED

Premier John Savage today announced that senior government
solicitor Jim Spurr has been appointed acting Clerk of the
Executive Council.

A graduate of Saint Mary's University and Dalhousie Law School,
Mr. Spurr joined government in 1981. For several years he has
been solicitor assigned to the Finance Department. In addition to
his duties in the department, Mr. Spurr has provided legal
services on a range of initiatives, including the Canada-Nova
Scotia Offshore Accord, privatization of Nova Scotia Power and
provincial agreements with First Nations.

Mr. Spurr succeeds Brenda Shannon, who retired as Clerk of the
Executive Council last week. The Clerk of the Executive Council
(cabinet) provides legal advice to cabinet, reviews submissions
to cabinet to ensure they conform with policy and legal
requirements and manages the flow of cabinet documents.
