Natural Resources Minister Eleanor Norrie has announced that $4.4
million in provincial funding will be available to private
woodlot owners in Nova Scotia this year for forestry development.

"This funding is provided entirely by the province," said Mrs.
Norrie. "Under the private lands program administered by the
Department of Natural Resources, incentives will be available to
help offset the cost of site preparation, planting, thinning,
shelterwood cuts and other approved silviculture treatments on
private woodlots."

During fiscal 1996-97, $6.4 million was spent on the private
lands program. Although the amount is less this year, funds will
be pro-rated the same as previous years.

"The $4.4 million provided in the budget for the current fiscal
year underlines our government's commitment to support
sustainable development and management of our forest resource,"
said Mrs. Norrie.

Additional funding from the private sector will mean the total
amount of funding for work on woodlots should be about $5.6
million in 1997-98.
