AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--MINISTERS MEET IN TROIS RIVIERES
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Agriculture and Marketing Minister Guy Brown said today he had
positive discussions on a number of issues with his Atlantic
counterparts in Trois Rivieres on Tuesday. They are in Quebec
this week to attend a federal-provincial conference of
agricultural ministers and deputy ministers.

Mr. Brown met with New Brunswick Agriculture & Rural Development
Minister, Doug Tyler; Prince Edward Island Department of
Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry Minister, J. Eric Hammill; and
Newfoundland Forest Resources and Agrifoods Minister, Beaton
Tulk.

The ministers took the opportunity to get together to discuss
areas of mutual interest specific to the Atlantic provinces and
have agreed to cooperate in a number of key areas. The meeting
was a follow-up to meetings hosted by Mr. Brown in Truro during
the last week of March.

Discussions centred around the need to develop regional
opportunities for hog and beef production. The ministers
expressed concern over the reduction in research and
development funding in the region in recent years. They also
discussed the need for stable feed grain and corn supplies, and
the issue of inter-provincial trade barriers such as inspection
fees.

Agriculture ministers from across Canada met yesterday. Today the
federal-provincial meetings take place and the sessions will wrap
up Friday.
