AGRICULTURE/MARKETING--INTERNATIONAL TRADE ISSUES DISCUSSED
-----------------------------------------------------------------
International trade was a key agenda item during a meeting of
federal-provincial ministers and deputy ministers of agriculture
attending a conference this week at Trois-Rivieres, Que.

Agriculture and Marketing Minister Guy Brown of Nova Scotia, in a
discussion on agri-food trade issues, encouraged the federal
government to continue to address outstanding trade issues
involving sugar and sugar-containing products.

"The uncertainty surrounding this issue directly affects plants
in Nova Scotia and we are interested in seeing this resolved as
soon as possible," said Mr. Brown.

The minister also raised Nova Scotia's concerns over access to
alternative sources of feed grains. Federal officials indicated
that the Canadian tariff rate quota imposed on imports of
American barley could soon be lifted. It was noted that Nova
Scotia farmers could currently apply for supplementary imports.

The conference concludes today with discussions on the Canadian
food inspection system.
