ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT/TOURISM--INTERNET PROJECT LINKS BUSINESSES
-----------------------------------------------------------------
With the use of Internet technology, business people in remote
communities have access to the world. The Strait East Nova
Community Enterprise Network (SENCEN) will help local businesses
and citizens in Guysborough, Antigonish, Inverness and Richmond
counties to use modern information and telecommunication
technology as a means of generating new economic opportunities.

The project was announced today in Port Hawkesbury by MLA Ray
White, on behalf of Manning MacDonald, Minister of Economic
Development and Tourism, and Fred Mifflin, Secretary of State for
the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency and Enterprise Cape
Breton Corp.

Project co-ordinator SENCEN will study the impact of technologies
on rural communities and identify programs that can be delivered
through new technologies. It will work in partnership with the
local school board, the three regional development authorities in
northeastern Nova Scotia, local businesses and the community.

The Canada/Nova Scotia COOPERATION Agreement on Economic
Diversification will contribute $278,300 over two years toward
the total project cost of $507,465.

"This project, which will create three jobs, will help local
businesses make better use of technology all over the world,"
said Mr. White. "The direct result will be an increase in
business exports and economic activity which will benefit the
region."

"This is a great opportunity for this area of the province," said
Wilf MacNeil, SENCEN director of development. "With community
involvement, we hope to create community enterprise centres in 13
rural communities throughout the region. This will increase
community access to computers in the schools."

Added John Parker, executive director of the Antigonish Regional
Development Authority: "This project will benefit the business
community, the schools and the community. It will also increase
the intellectual growth of citizens in the region who will become
familiar with Internet technology."

The Canada/Nova Scotia COOPERATION Agreement on Economic
Diversification is managed federally by the Atlantic Canada
Opportunities Agency and Enterprise Cape Breton Corp. and
provincially by Economic Development and Tourism.
