NATURAL RESOURCES--PROPOSALS CALLED FOR ONSHORE EXPLORATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A call for proposals to explore for oil and gas over nearly one
million acres (about 400,000 hectares) of land in northern Nova
Scotia has been announced by Natural Resources Minister Ken
MacAskill.

"There are seven parcels available for exploration in the whole
package," said Mr. MacAskill. "Most of them are along the
Northumberland shore, stretching from the Amherst area across to
Pictou and New Glasgow. The two remaining blocks are north of
Truro and along the Minas Basin shore from Londonderry to
Advocate."

The Department of Natural Resources will accept separate
proposals for exploration of each block until Nov. 10. Results of
the call for proposals will be announced within 90 days of the
closing date. If exploration agreements are issued, they will be
for terms of three years each.

"If there is interest in exploration of these areas, it will help
to determine whether there is any potential for onshore oil or
gas development in Nova Scotia," said Mr. MacAskill.

Late in July, the department issued a call for proposals to
explore for petroleum on a small (20,000 acres, or 8,000
hectares) parcel of land in the Stellarton area. Proposals for
that area will be accepted until Friday, Sept. 19.
