Approximately 230 newly elected municipal officials will be in
Halifax this weekend to learn the ropes of municipal government.

The goal of Orientation 97 is to provide municipal officials
with an overview of municipal government. It takes place Nov.
28-29 at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel.

On Friday night, Mayor Christopher Clarke of Region of Queens
Municipality will give a presentation on community relations. Guy
Brown, Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, and Walter
Fitzgerald, president of the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities
and mayor of Halifax Regional Municipality, will address
delegates at the opening reception.

On Saturday, sessions will be held on: the roles and
responsibilities of local government; council meeting procedures;
legal authority of council and municipal conflict of interest;
and municipal finances.

The guest speaker for Saturday's luncheon is Doug Carter, former
mayor of Truro and a past president of the Union of Nova Scotia
Municipalities.

Orientation 97 is sponsored by the Department of Housing and
Municipal Affairs, the Union of Nova Scotia Municipalities, the
Maritime Municipal Training and Development Board, the
