Premier's Office --Rita MacNeil at Province House

Premier Russell MacLellan announced today in celebration of the
International Years of Music, the province will honour singer
Rita MacNeil at a reception and luncheon at Province House,
Monday, Dec. 15.

"We are pleased to be honouring such an inspirational and
talented entertainer," said the premier. "Rita MacNeil has been
captivating audiences for many years.  Her international success
and loyalty to her native Cape Breton have created worldwide
publicity for Nova Scotia."

Entertainment at the reception will be provided by other talented
Nova Scotia artists including fiddler Buddy MacMaster, guitarist
Scott MacMillan, the Jeff Goodspeed Trio, Le Trio Acadien,  and
the Halifax/Dartmouth High School Choir -The Sound Tracks.   The
coordinator of music for the event is Shimon Walt, president of
Walt Music.

"This celebration is a wonderful opportunity to pay tribute to
Ms. MacNeil for her hard work and  recognition she has brought to
the East Coast music industry," said Premier MacLellan. "The
level of Nova Scotia talent performing in her honour is an
indication of the substantial growth in the music industry."

Rita MacNeil, a native of Big Pond, Cape Breton, recently
released her 14th recording, Music of a Thousand Nights.  Ms.
MacNeil was awarded the Order of Canada in 1992, and was honoured
in 1996 with a Gemini Award for her television show Rita and
Friends.  She has also received several Canadian Country and East
Coast music awards.

Reception guests will be donating food items to the Metro Food
Bank.
