Community Bus Pass

The Community Bus Pass provides employment support and income assistance clients (and eligible family members) and disability support program participants in Halifax Regional Municipality and Cape Breton Regional Municipality with a free bus pass.

The Department of Opportunities and Social Development has partnered with Cape Breton Regional Municipality and the Halifax Regional Municipality to offer an annual Community Bus Pass to all eligible people in employment support and income assistance and the disability support program who live in either municipality.

Cape Breton Regional Municipality Eligibility

Employment support and income assistance clients

Free annual bus passes are available to employment support and income assistance clients. Passes are also available to their:

  • spouses
  • children 5 to 21

Children 5 or younger can ride Transit Cape Breton for free (and don’t need a bus pass).

Disability support program participants

Free annual bus passes are available to eligible disability support program participants living in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality.

How to get your bus pass in the CBRM

  1. Book individual appointments online.
  2. You and your eligible family members need to attend your appointment at one of three Department of Opportunities and Social Development offices in the CBRM.
  3. The department takes your photo to print on your pass.
  4. The department mails your bus pass to your home.

If your address is going to change soon, tell your caseworker before you sign up for a bus pass.

Halifax Regional Municipality Eligibility

Employment support and income assistance clients

  • spouses
  • children 13 to 21 who are not part of the Student Transit Pass Program in Halifax Regional Municipality

Children 12 or younger can ride Halifax Transit for free (and don’t need a bus pass).

Disability support program participants

Free annual bus passes are available to eligible disability support program participants living in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

How to get your bus pass in the HRM

  1. You and your eligible family members need to visit one of the Department of Opportunities and Social Development offices in the HRM.
  2. The department takes your photo to print on your pass.
  3. The department mails your bus pass to your home.

If your address is going to change soon, tell your caseworker before you sign up for a bus pass.

Bus pass photo offices in the HRM

In the Halifax Regional Municipality, you can get your photo taken at one of these Department of Opportunities and Social Development offices. Offices are open from Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm.

Halifax Transit and Transit Cape Breton require that the Community Bus Pass (and all other annual bus passes) include the name and photo of the person using the pass. The Department of Opportunities and Social Development collects and uses your photo only for your bus pass. This follows the privacy provisions of the Nova Scotia Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP).
