Path Program

Investments in families are fundamental to breaking the cycle of poverty that often repeats generation after generation. Evidence shows working with children and families early can help them better manage challenges and can dramatically improve their outcomes.

Each year in Nova Scotia, just over 80 youth transition out of care on their nineteenth birthday.

In some cases, young people transitioning out of the care system face poverty and housing challenges before they have a chance to understand the steps required to successfully transition into adulthood.

Path

The Path program is designed to support and provide financial assistance to youth leaving the permanent care and custody of the Minister of Community Services at the age of majority, and those who are transitioning to adulthood while living independently under a Youth Service Agreement. Our mission is to ensure that you are safe, healthy, and connected to your community, and that you have equitable opportunities to access the supports needed to thrive and reach your fullest potential.

Path is available to individuals ages 19 to 24 who have:

reached the age of majority (19 or 21) when their permanent care and custody order ended, or
reached the age of 19 while supported to live outside their parent or guardian’s home pursuant to Section 19 of the CFSA through an active Youth Services Agreement.

Youth formerly supported by Mi’kmaw Family and Children’s Services of Nova Scotia (MFCS) will contact MFCS directly to discuss Post Majority Support Services enrollment.

In addition to financial support in the form of bi-weekly payments, Path offers support through Youth Outreach Plus. As a participant, you will be required to check-in with Youth Outreach Services periodically, with the frequency of these check-ins varying based on your age. Participation in any programming or services offered through Youth Outreach Services is voluntary.
