Death Review Committee recommendations

By learning from these tragedies, we can take meaningful steps to prevent future deaths.

When a life is lost in tragic circumstances, families and communities are deeply affected. The Department of Justice and our partners share in that sense of loss. Death review committees are one way we work to learn from these tragedies and help improve systems, services and supports that protect people's safety and wellbeing.

Nova Scotia has three death review committees: the Child Death Review Committee, Domestic Violence Death Review Committee and Deaths in Custody Review Committee.

Under Nova Scotia's Fatality Investigations Act, these committees review certain deaths and provide the Minister of Justice with advice and recommendations for the prevention of similar deaths.

The law also requires that the recommendations from each review be made public. Before they are shared, all personal or identifying information is removed to protect the privacy of those involved. Committees also submit annual public reports with a description of trends and a summary of recommendations for system improvements.
