Storm Surges

A storm surge is an abnormal rise in water levels along the coast. They are caused by high winds, like those during a hurricane or severe winter storm. On exposed coastlines, storm surges are often accompanied by high waves. Storm surges can hit quickly and with little time for preparation. Your best chance of reducing damage from a storm surge is to plan ahead.

  • Listen to the media for warnings and other information.
  • Put away lawn furniture, planters, picnic tables, small boats or anything that could be swept away in a flood.
  • Keep valuables out of the basement if your area is prone to flooding.
  • Make sure the basement windows are closed.
  • Stay indoors on the downwind side of the house, away from windows.
