Planning Strategies

Municipalities have the primary responsibility for planning and regulating the use and development of land, buildings and structures within their jurisdiction. Having authority at the local level recognizes that communities differ and that it is important for municipalities, as the government that is closest to the people, to have the tools to develop a vision for and control over the nature and form of development within its boundaries. This section will help municipalities develop their municipal planning strategies and land use by-laws. It also includes facts about the history of planning legislation in Nova Scotia, as well as material on urban development in rural settings and related challenges.
