RETAIL TRADE JANUARY 2018

In January, Nova Scotia's seasonally adjusted retail sales increased 1.1% month-over-month to $1.3 billion and increased 4.2% over January 2017. The Nova Scotia retail trade index (2015=100) increased to 114.3.

In Canada, seasonally adjusted retail sales increased 0.3% month-over-month to $49.9 billion and increased 3.6 per cent over January 2017. The Canada retail trade index (2015=100) increased to 114.2.

 

Canada and the Provinces

In January 2018, six provinces reported month-over-month increases in seasonally adjusted retail sales. The other four provinces reported declines, including New Brunswick (-1.3 per cent) and Newfoundland and Labrador (-1.1 per cent).

All provinces except Newfoundland and Labrador reported positive year-over year (Jan 2017 to Jan 2018) retail sales growth.  The largest gains were in British Columbia (+6.2 per cent), followed by New Brunswick (+4.4 per cent), Nova Scotia (+4.2 per cent) and Manitoba (+4.1 per cent).

 

Sectors 

Comparing January 2018 with the same month in 2017, unadjusted retail trade increased 6.7% (+$69 million) in Nova Scotia.

  • Motor Vehicle with a 24% share of retail trade increased 4.0 per cent (+$10.4 million).
  • Furniture with a 3% share increased 31.5 per cent (+$7.3 million).
  • Electronics with a 1% share increased 0.9 per cent (+$118 thousand).
  • Building Material with a 7% share increased 11.5 per cent (+$7.8 million).
  • Food & Beverage with a 23% share increased 1.9 per cent (+$4.7 million).
  • Health with a 9% share increased 6.6 per cent (+$6.4 million).
  • Gas Stations with a 15% share increased 21.5 per cent (+$30 million).
  • Sporting & Hobbies with a 2% share increased 3.5 per cent (+$565 thousand).
  • General Merchandise with a 11% share increased 3.1 per cent (+$3.5 million).
  • Clothing with a 3% share decreased 1.2 per cent (-$354 thousand).
  • Misc. Stores with a 2% share decreased 4.4 per cent (-$997 thousand).

 

 

E-Commerce

In January 2018, Canadian unadjusted retail e-commerce sales (3.1% of retail trade) increased 14.8 per cent to $1.3 billion compared to the same month last year.
