US RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2018

Month-over-Month, Year-over-Year

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for March 2018 was a seasonally adjusted $494.6 billion, 0.6 per cent higher than February 2018 and 4.5 per cent higher than March 2017.

Retail trade sales increased 0.6 per cent from February, and increased 4.7 per cent over March 2017. Non-store retailers were up 9.7 per cent and Gasoline Stations were up 9.7 per cent from the same month last year.

 

Year-to-Date

 

In Jan-Mar 2018, the United States unadjusted Retail & Food Services increased 4.8 per cent ($64.0 billion) over Jan-Mar 2017 to $1,392 billion.

Retail Trade increased 5.1 per cent ($59.3 billion) over Jan-Mar 2017 to $1,224 billion.

• Other Retail Operations (including food services), 29% of total retail trade increased 5.1% or $19.7 billion.
• Motor vehicle sector, 21% of total retail trade increased 3.5% or $9.8 billion.
• Gasoline Stations, 8% of total retail trade increased 10.4% or $10.8 billion.
• Building materials, 6% of total retail trade increased 5.4% or $4.3 billion.
• Food and beverage sector, 13% of total retail trade increased 4.6% or $7.8 billion.
• General merchandise stores, 12% of total retail trade increased 3.7% or $5.8 billion.
• Misc. retail, 2% of total retail trade increased 6.0% or $1.7 billion.
• Furniture stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 4.9% or $1.3 billion.
• Clothing stores, 4% of total retail trade increased 4.7% or $2.6 billion.
• Electronics stores, 2% of total retail trade increased 2.8% or $0.6 billion.
• Sports and hobby stores, 1% of total retail trade decreased 2.6% or $0.5 billion.
