UK RETAIL SALES, MARCH 2018

The UK Office for National Statistics reports that UK retail sales declined in March.  The value of retail sales were down by 0.9 per cent, but after excluding the impacts of price changes, the volume of retail sales was down by 1.2 per cent.  The monthly retail sales bulletin attributes much of the decline to a fall in sales of gasoline associated with poor winter weather.

Year-over-year UK retail sales values were 3.0 per cent higher in March 2018 than they were in March 2017.  UK retail sales volumes are up 1.1 per cent in real terms year-over-year after accounting for price increases.  Through the first quarter of 2018, UK retail sales values are up 3.8 per cent compared with the same months of 2017 while retail sales volumes were up 1.4 per cent.
