Month-over-month
In Nova Scotia February 2018, the seasonally adjusted index of growth (2015=100) increased 4.0 points to 109.7.
In Nova Scotia February 2018, on a seasonally adjusted basis month-over-month wholesale sales increased 4.0 per cent to $843 million. On a year-over-year basis, wholesale sales were 5.1 per cent higher than February 2017. On a year-to-date basis (Jan-Feb total) wholesale sales were 0.4%lower than the same period last year.
In Canada February 2018, on a seasonally adjusted basis the wholesale index of growth (2015=100) decreased 0.9 points to 114.2.
On a month-over-month basis, wholesale sales decreased 0.8 per cent to $62.8 billion. On a year-over-year basis, wholesale sales were 5.0 per cent higher over February 2017. On a year-to-date basis (Jan-Feb totals) wholesale sales were 5.7% higher than the same period last year.
By Province
On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up in three provinces, down in seven.
On a year-over-year basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up in eight provinces. Two provinces reported double-digit growth over the same month last year.
On a year-to-date basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up in eight provinces. Two provinces reported double digit growth over the same period last year.
Nova Scotia Sectors
Statistics Canada now releases seasonally adjusted wholesale trade data by sector at the provincial level. As there has been significant volatility in recent wholesale values for Nova Scotia. Year-to-date comparisons are more indicative of economic conditions for volatile indicators and seasonally adjusted wholesale values will also smooth out the indicator.
Year-to-date wholesale sales by sector in Nova Scotia decreased by $6.6 billion, (-0.4%) compared to Jan-Feb 2017. The dollar decrease was largely accounted for by Food, beverage and tobacco wholesalers (-87.0 million). The other sub sectors reported increased wholesale trade, but it was not sufficient to overcome the decline in food and beverage.
