NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE APRIL 2018

Year-to-Date (Jan-Apr 2018 vs. Jan-Apr 2017, customs-based, unadjusted)


In Jan-Apr 2018, Nova Scotia merchandise trade exports increased $164.4 million (10.4 per cent) over Jan-Apr 2017 to $1.8 billion.. 

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Apr 2018 with the same period in 2017, the largest dollar value increase were in forestry (+$51.3 million), farm/fishing/intermediate food products (+$26.7 million), and Metal/Mineral Products (+$19.4 million). Energy products were up $8.0 million, but now make up a relatively small portion of Nova Scotia's exports.


On a year-to-date basis, exports values increased in:

  • Forestry products and building and packaging materials by 25.7% ($51.3 million) 
  • Farm, fishing and intermediate food products by 8.7% (+$26.7 million) 
  • Metal and non-metallic mineral products by 31.1% ($19.4 million) 
  • Basic and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products by 15.8% (+$18.2 million) 
  • Motor vehicles and parts by 4.3% (+$18.2 million) 
  • Consumer goods by 5.2% (+$17.6 million) 
  • Energy products by 114.3% (+$8.0 million) 
  • Metal/Ores by 28.7% (+$4.3 million) 
  • Electronic and electrical equipment and parts by 6.1% (+$2.6 million).

 

 

 

YTD by Province

In Jan-Apr 2018, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (+20.6%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Apr 2017. Nova Scotia reported a  +10.4% gain in merchandise trade exports. The Canadian average was a 1.5% increase in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Apr 2017.  Exports were downin Saskachewan (-0.4%), Prince Edward Island (-2.5%) and Ontario (-2.8%) over the same period last year.

Excluding energy exports, Manitoba reported the fastest growth at 11.1%, followed by Nova Scotia at 9.9%.  Newfoundland and Labrador's non-energy exports were down 17.2% while Saskatchewan, Ontario and Prince Edward Island were down 3.6%,  3.0% and 2.5% respectively.
