WHOLESALE TRADE, APRIL 2018

Month-over-month

In Nova Scotia April 2018, the seasonally adjusted Index of growth (2015=100) increased 2.07 points to 112.2.

In Nova Scotia April 2018, on a seasonally adjusted basis

  • month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 1.9 per cent to $861.4 million.
  • year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 4.4 per cent over April 2017.
  • year-to-date basis (Jan-Apr 2018), Wholesale Trade increased 3.8 per cent over Jan-Apr 2017.

In Canada April 2018, the seasonally adjusted Index of growth (2015=100) increased 0.1 points to 114.8.

In Canada April 2018, on a seasonally adjusted basis

  • month-over-month Wholesale Trade increased 0.1 per cent to $63.1 billion.
  • year-over-year Wholesale Trade increased 4.3 per cent over April 2017.
  • year-to-date basis (Jan-Apr 2018), Wholesale Trade increased 5.3 per cent over Jan-Apr 2017.

 

By Province

On a month over month basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up 0.1 per cent nationally.  Seven provinces reported monthly increases in wholesale trade, with Prince Edward Island reporting the largest gain, in percentage terms.  Wholesale trade declined in Manitoba, Ontario and New Brunswick, month over month.

On a year-over-year basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up in eight provinces. Compared to April 2017, Prince Edward Island (+21.0 per cent) reported the strongest growth in percentage terms, followed by Newfoundland and Labrador (+13.8 per cent).

On a year-to-date basis, seasonally adjusted wholesale trade was up in eight provinces. Prince Edward Island reported the strongest growth, in percentage terms, while Newfoundland and Labrador reported the largest decline, followed by Saskatchewan.

 

Nova Scotia Sectors

Statistics Canada now releases seasonally adjusted wholesale trade data by sector at the provincial level. As there has been significant volatility in recent wholesale values for Nova Scotia, year-to-date comparisons are more indicative of economic conditions for volatile indicators and seasonally adjusted wholesale values will also smooth out the indicator.

In Nova Scotia on a year-to-date basis, total wholesale trade increased 3.8 per cent (+$123.9 million) over the same period last year.

  • Food and beverage with a 32% share of Wholesale Trade decreased 5.5 per cent (-$62.7 million).
  • Motor vehicle and parts with a 17% share increased 1.7 per cent (+$9.5 million).
  • Building material with a 20% share increased 7.5 per cent(+$47.6 million).
  • Machinery, equipment with a 17% share increased 10.9 per cent(+$56.3 million).
  • Miscellaneous wholesalers with a 8% share increased 21.7 per cent(+$45.7 million).
