EURO AREA CURRENT ACCOUNT, MAY 2018

The European Central Bank reported today that the euro area (EA19) current account (working day and seasonally adjusted) recorded a surplus of €22.4 billion in May 2018. Surpluses in net goods trade (+€20.5 billion), net services trade (+€8.3 billion) and net primary income (+€3.4 billion) were partially offset by a deficit in net secondary income (-€9.7 billion) account.

In May 2018, Euro Area exports of goods and services increased to €265.2 billion as goods exports rose to more than offset the decline in service exports.  Imports of goods and services increased to €236.4 billion, with imports rising for both goods and services.  With imports rising more than exports, the net trade surplus eroded to €28.8 billion.
