NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE JUNE 2018

Year-to-Date (Jan-Jun 2018 vs. Jan-Jun 2017, customs-based, unadjusted)


In Jan-Jun 2018, Nova Scotia merchandise trade exports increased $247.7 million (9.3 per cent) over Jan-Jun 2017 to $2.9 billion. 

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Jun 2018 with the same period in 2017, the largest dollar value increases were in forestry (+$80.8 million), consumer goods (+$57.8 million), and Metal/Mineral Products (+$28.8 million). Energy products were up $12.7 million, but now make up a relatively small portion of Nova Scotia's exports.


On a year-to-date basis, exports values increased in:

  • Forestry products and building and packaging materials by 26.1% ($80.8 million) 
  • Farm, fishing and intermediate food products by 3.3% (+$16.9 million) 
  • Metal and non-metallic mineral products by 29.9% ($28.8 million) 
  • Basic and industrial chemical, plastic and rubber products by 14.0% (+$23.1 million) 
  • Motor vehicles and parts by 2.5% (+$16.3 million) 
  • Consumer goods by 8.1% (+$57.8 million) 
  • Energy products by 160.8% (+$12.7 million) 
  • Metal/Ores by 50.2% (+$11.6 million) 
  • Electronic and electrical equipment and parts by 3.6% (+$2.6 million).

 

 

In Jan-Jun 2018, Consumer goods led the way with a value of $771 million. Motor vehicles and parts is the second largest sector in Nova Scotia at $662 million. Number three is Farm, fishing and Intermediate Food at $522 million. The fourth most important export sector is Forestry, Building and Packaging Materials sector at $390 million. Together, these four sectors account for 81% of Nova Scotia domestic exports.

 

 

 

YTD Exports by International Destination

Nova Scotia’s trade continues to diversity.  Although exports to the US grew by 4.3 per cent or +$76 million (YTD Jan-Jun18 vs Jan-Jun17).  This is slower than the overall pace of export growth, indicating that the province’s exports are growing more rapidly in other jurisdictions.  Nova Scotia’s exports to China are up by 27.6 per cent or +$83 million in the same period.  Exports to other markets in Asia are down after sharp increases last year, including: Japan (-$5 million), South Korea (-$1 million) and notably Hong Kong (-$31 million).  Nova Scotia’s YTD exports are up to Mexico (+$11 million), the Netherlands (+$32 million), Australia (+$17 million), Spain (+$8 million), Indonesia (+$7 million), India (+$6 million), Turkey (+$5 million). Iraq (+$3 million) and the United Kingdom (+$3 million).  There was a $5 million decline (-13.5 per cent) in YTD exports to France.

 

  

In Jan-Jun 2018, the United States share of Nova Scotia domestic exports declined 3 points to 64% over the same period last year.

In Jan-Jun 2018, the China share of Nova Scotia domestic exports increased 2 points to 13% over the same period last year.


  

 

YTD by Province

In Jan-Jun 2018, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (+22.0%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Jun 2017. Nova Scotia reported a +9.3% gain in merchandise trade exports. The Canadian average was a 3.6% increase in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Jun 2017.  Exports were down in Ontario (-2.3%) and Prince Edward Island (-5.4%) over the same period last year.

Excluding energy exports, Manitoba reported the fastest growth at 12.2%, followed by Alberta at 10.1%.  Four provinces (Saskatchewan, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador) down 1.7%,  2.5%, 5.7% and 8.9% respectively. Canada reported a 1.5% increase in Non-energy exports.
