September 14, 2018US RETAIL SALES, AUGUST 2018 The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for August 2018 was a seasonally adjusted $509.0 billion, 0.1 per cent higher than revised results for July 2018 and 6.6 per cent higher than August 2017.
Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.1 per cent from July, and increased 6.2 per cent over August 2017. Food service and drinking place receipts grew by 0.2 per cent from last month and 10.1 cent from last year to $61.9 billion.
In the first eight months of 2018, US retail sales and food services trade increased 5.5 per cent over Jan-Aug 2017. Retail trade increased 5.5 per cent while food services and drinking places sales grew by 6.0 per cent. Sales were up in all categories except for sporting and recreation stores. The fastest gains were in gas stations (including the effects of rising oil prices) as well as non-store retailers.
