Retail sales in the European Union were up 0.3 per cent in August (seasonally adjusted index of turnover value) compared with July. For the Euro Area, retail sales were up 0.2 per cent.
On a year-to-date basis comparing seasonally adjusted retail sales in January-August 2018 with the same months of 2017, EU retail sales values (not deflated) are up 3.7 per cent. Euro Area retail sales are up 2.9 per cent year-to-date.
By member state, the strongest year-to-date retail sales growth continues to be reported among Eastern European countries such as Romania, Hungary, Latvia, Poland, Slovakia, Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. Retail sales have grown more slowly in Italy, Greece, Belgium and Denmark.

By retail sector, the strongest growth (Jan-Aug18 vs Jan-Aug17, not deflated) is found in mail order and internet sales, followed by automotive fuels, pharmaceutical/medical/cosmetics and food/beverage/tobacco retailers. Clothing/footwear retailers reported declining retail sales.
