In Jan-Aug 2018, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 7.9% ($285.8 million) over Jan-Aug 2017, to $3.9 billion.
YTD - By Sector
Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Aug 2018 with the same period last year the largest dollar value increases were in Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials ($111.1 million), Consumer Goods ($37.4 million), and Chemical, plastic, rubber ($34.6 million). Energy increased 207.4% but now makes up a relatively small portion of Nova Scotia's exports.
On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in
- Energy by 207.4% ($16.8) million)
- Metal/Ores by 41.1% ($13.7) million)
- Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 26.2% ($111.1) million)
- Metal/Mineral Products by 20.0% ($27.6) million)
- Chemical, plastic, rubber by 16.1% ($34.6) million)
- Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 4.4% ($28.5) million)
- Electronics by 3.8% ($3.8) million)
- Consumer Goods by 3.6% ($37.4) million)
In Jan-Aug 2018
- Consumer Goods led the way with a value of $1.09 billion (28 % share), followed by
- Motor vehicles/Parts with a value of $863.5 million (22 % share),
- Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $669.9 million (17 % share),
- Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $535.0 million (14 % share),
- Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $249.2 million (6 % share),
- Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $165.8 million (4 % share),
- Electronics with a value of $103.1 million (3 % share),
- Machinery/Equipment with a value of $76.2 million (2 % share),
- Metal/Ores with a value of $47.0 million (1 % share),
- Special Transactions with a value of $36.9 million (1 % share),
- Transportation Equipment with a value of $35.4 million (1 % share) and ,
- Energy with a value of $24.9 million (1 % share).
YTD by Province
In Jan-Aug 2018, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (+29.1%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Aug 2017. Nova Scotia reported a +7.9% gain in merchandise trade exports. The Canadian average was a 6.9% increase in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Aug 2017. Exports were down in Ontario (-0.1%) and Prince Edward Island (-2.6%) over the same period last year.
Excluding energy exports, Manitoba reported the fastest growth at 12.6%, followed by New Brunswick at 11.8% and Alberta at 11.6%. Three provinces (Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador) were down 0.4%, 2.6% and 12.5% respectively. Canada reported a 3.8% increase in Non-energy exports.
