In August 2018, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) deficit switched to a $526 million surplus. Canada's trade balance was in a surplus position for the first time since December 2016.
Exports are down 1.1% to $50.5 billon over July 2018, and are up 15.5% over August 2017. Imports are down 2.5% to $50.0 billon over July 2018, and are up 7.3% over August 2017.
In August 2018, the Canadian merchandise trade (balance of payment basis, seasonally adjusted) surplus with the United States was unchanged at $5.3 billion.
Year-to-date
In the period Jan-Aug 2018, the year-to-date Canadian merchandise trade deficit reached $13.2 billon. Year-to-date goods Exports were valued at $389.9 billon and year-to-date goods Imports were valued at $403.0 billon.
