US RETAIL SALES, SEPTEMBER 2018

The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for September 2018 was a seasonally adjusted $509.0 billion, 0.1 per cent higher than revised results for August 2018 and 4.7 per cent higher than September 2017.

Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.4 per cent from August, and increased 4.4 per cent over September 2017. Food service and drinking place receipts decreased 1.8 per cent to $60.6 billion in September, and 7.1 per cent higher than in September 2017.  

In the first nine months of 2018, US retail sales and food services trade increased 5.4 per cent over Jan-Sep 2017.  Retail trade increased 5.3 per cent while food services and drinking places sales grew by 6.0 per cent.  Sales were up in all categories except for sporting and recreation stores.  The fastest gains were in gas stations (including the effects of rising oil prices) and non-store retailers.
