March 11, 2019US RETAIL SALES, JANUARY 2019 The US Census Bureau announced today that the advance estimates of U.S retail and food service sales for January 2019, was a seasonally adjusted 0.2 per cent increase ($1.1 billion) over December 2018 to $504.4 billion, and a 2.3 per cent increase over January 2018.
Excluding food services and drinking places, retail trade sales increased 0.2 per cent over December 2018, and increased 1.9 per cent over January 2018. Food service and drinking place receipts increased 0.7 per cent to $60.8 billion.
In January 2019, United States seasonally adjusted Retail Trade & Food Services increased 2.3 per cent over January 2018. Retail trade increased 1.9 per cent and food services and drinking places sales increased 5.4 per cent.
Sales were up in 8 of 12 categories, the fastest gains being reported in building materials and non-store retailers. The largest declines were seen in sporting and recreation, and miscellaneous retailers (in percentage terms).
