NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE JANUARY 2019

Year-to-Date (Jan 2019 vs. Jan 2018, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan 2019, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 15.1% ($62.3 million) over Jan 2018, to $473.6 million.

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan 2019 with the same period last year the largest dollar value increase was in Consumer Goods ($16.7 million), Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials ($12.8 million), and  Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($12.6 million),

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in

  • Metal/Ores by 87.6% ($2.7 million)
  • Machinery/Equipment by 61.7% ($5.6 million)
  • Consumer Goods by 22.9% ($16.7 million)
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 21.3% ($12.8 million)
  • Electronics by 13.6% ($1.3 million)
  • Motor vehicles/Parts by 12.3% ($11.7 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 12.2% ($12.6 million)
  • Special Transactions by 5.8% ($0.3 million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 2.2% ($0.6 million) 

and declined in 

  • Metal/Mineral Products by -6.0% (-$1.1 million)
  • Transportation Equipment by -12.1% (-$0.6 million)
  • Energy by -13.8% (-$0.3 million)

 

In Jan 2019

  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food led the way with a value of $115.4 million (24 % share), followed by
  • Motor vehicles/Parts with a value of $106.7 million (23 % share),
  • Consumer Goods with a value of $89.9 million (19 % share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $73.0 million (15 % share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $29.0 million (6 % share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $17.1 million (4 % share),
  • Machinery/Equipment with a value of $14.6 million (3 % share),
  • Electronics with a value of $10.9 million (2 % share),
  • Metal/Ores with a value of $5.8 million (1 % share),
  • Special Transactions with a value of $4.7 million (1 % share),
  • Transportation Equipment with a value of $4.5 million (1 % share), and,
  • Energy with a value of $2.0 million (0 % share).

 

 YTD by Province

In Jan 2019, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (23.4%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 15.1% gain in merchandise trade exports and Canada reported a 1.5% loss in merchandise trade exports over Jan 2018.

Excluding energy exports, Manitoba reported the fastest growth at 12.8%, followed by Alberta at 12.1% and British Columbia at 10.1%. Nova Scotia reported a 7.2% gain in non-energy merchandise trade exports.  Canada reported a 4.9% increase in Non-energy exports.

 

 

 YTD EXPORTS BY INTERNATIONAL DESTINATION

 

 

 

In Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018, Nova Scotia International Merchandise trade to the Unbited States  increased 16.1% to $307.3 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 65%.

In Jan 2019 vs Jan 2018, Nova Scotia International Merchandise trade to China increased 48.2% to $88.4 million. Share of total merchandise trade exports was 18.7%.
