TERANET-NATIONAL BANK HOUSE PRICE INDEX, MARCH 2018

In March, Halifax home prices as measured by the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index increased 0.8 per cent compared to the previous month. The Halifax price level was up 3.0 per cent compared to March 2018.

Monthly resale home prices are down 0.3 per cent for the 11-city composite of the Teranet-National Bank House Price Index, with 7 of the 11 cities reporting lower housing prices compared to one year ago.  Increases were seen in Halifax and Montreal. The largest monthly decline was in Ottawa-Gatineau (-1.5 per cent).

National year-over-year price growth was 1.5 per cent in March and has been tracking below 3 per cent for several months. National year over year price growth has slowed considerably with price growth in recent months at its lowest rate since 2009. Halifax year-over-year price growth rose to 3.0 per cent in March after being below 2 per cent growth the previous four months.

Year to date, Halifax house prices were up 2.0 per cent, while the National index increased 1.9 per cent over the same period last year. Across the 11 metropolitan markets, prices were up in 8, the largest increase in Ottawa-Gatineau. The price declines have occurred in Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver.
