NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE MARCH 2019

Year-to-Date (Jan-Mar 2018 vs. Jan-Mar 2019, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan-Mar 2019, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 6.4% ($83.6 million) over Jan-Mar 2018, to $1.38 billion.

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Mar 2019 with the same period last year, the largest dollar value increases were in Consumer Goods ($36.3 million), Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($25.4 million), and Motor vehicles/Parts ($11.5 million).

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in

  • Machinery/Equipment by 32.1% ($9.3 million)
  • Metal/Ores by 22.1% ($2.7 million)
  • Electronics by 19.5% ($6.7 million)
  • Consumer Goods by 15.4% ($36.3 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 9.0% ($25.4 million)
  • Special Transactions by 7.5% ($1.0 million)
  • Motor vehicles/Parts by 3.5% ($11.5 million)
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 1.3% ($2.5 million)

And declined in

  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 0.7% ($0.6 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products by 6.5% ($3.7 million)
  • Transportation Equipment by 7.0% ($1.1 million) and
  • Energy by 54.4% ($6.4 million).

 

 

 

 YTD by Province

In Jan-Mar 2019, Prince Edward Island reported the highest increase (9.6%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Mar 2018. New Brunswick reported the greatest decrease,  21.9%, in international exports. Nova Scotia reported a 6.4% gain in merchandise trade exports.  Canada reported a 1.0% gain in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Mar 2018.

Excluding energy exports, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (24.6%) in Non-energy exports over Jan-Mar 2018. British Columbia reported the greatest decline, 2.7%. Nova Scotia reported a 7.0% gain in Non-energy exports.  Canada reported a 2.9% gain in Non-energy exports over Jan-Mar 2018.

Nova Scotia’s trade continues to diversity. 

In Nova Scotia  Jan-Mar 2019, international export trade to all countries  increased 6.4%  over Jam-Mar 2018 to $1.38 billion.

In Jan-Mar 2019

  • Motor vehicles/Parts led the way with a value of $340.3 million (25 % share), followed by
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $307.7 million (22 % share),
  • Consumer Goods with a value of $272.6 million (20 % share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $195.5 million (14 % share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $85.9 million (6 % share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $52.7 million (4 % share),
  • Electronics with a value of $41.2 million (3 % share),
  • Machinery/Equipment with a value of $38.2 million (3 % share),
  • Metal/Ores with a value of $14.7 million (1 % share),
  • Transportation Equipment with a value of $14.4 million (1 % share),
  • Special Transactions with a value of $14.1 million (1 % share), and,
  • Energy with a value of $5.4 million (0 % share),

 

 

In the period Jan-Mar 2018 vs Jan-Mar 2019, year-to-date export trade to the United States increased 5.5% ($47.0 million) to $894.7 million.  The United States share of total Nova Scotia exports was 64.7%.

 

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2018 vs Jan-Mar 2019) export trade to China increased 34.7% ($57.9 million) to $224.8 million. China share of total Nova Scotia exports was 16.3%.

 

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2018 vs Jan-Mar 2019) export trade to Asia excluding China  (including Japan up $3.4 million to $18.2 million; South Korea up $4.2 million to $27.8 million; Hong Kong down $4.4 million to $5.7 million; India down $3.8 million to $6.1 million; Taiwan down $1.6 million to $3.3 million; Indonesia down $11.2 million to $3.2 million;  Singapore up $0.02 million to $6.4 million; decreased 15.9% ($13.4 million) to $70.7 million. Other Major Asian share of total Nova Scotia exports was 5.1%.

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2018 vs Jan-Mar 2019) export trade to Europe (including United Kingdom up $4.3 million to $23.4 million; Germany up $7.0 million to $16.2 million; Italy up $1.3 million to $3.3 million; France up $5.9 million to $18.2 million; Netherlands down $5.5 million to $14.1 million; Belgium up $2.9 million to $9.9 million; Spain down $1.5 million to $8.1 million) increased 18.1% ($14.3 million) to $93.3 million. Major European countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 6.7%

Year-to-date (Jan-Mar 2018 vs Jan-Mar 2019) export trade to Other countries (including  Australia down $7.5 million to $3.8 million; Brazil down $1.1 million to $1.6 million; Iraq down $0.2 million to $1.5 million; Mexico down $6.9 million to $13.1 million; Norway up $1.3 million to $5.1 million;  Peru down $0.3 million to $0.17 million; Russian Federation down $1.3 million to $0.7 million; Switzerland down $0.4 million to $1.6 million; Saudi Arabia down $1.0 million to $0.2 million; Turkey down $2.8 million to $0.8 million; Residual down $2.2 million to $70.4 million)  together decreased 18.3% ($22.2 million) to $99.0 million. Other countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 7.2%
