INVESTMENT IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION, REVISIONS 2015-2019

Today's release of investment in building construction includes revised data for January 2015 through January 2019.  The data series has also been extended back to January 2010.

Over the period under revision, there were upward revisions in residential construction spending for every province. Nationally, residential investment is 3.4 per cent ($14.9 billion) higher than the previously reported total investment from 2015 to 2018. Upward revisions in Nova Scotia were the highest among the provinces at 5.7 per cent ($519 million) higher than previously reported.

 

Over the period January 2015 to January 2019, only three months had downward revisions to residential building investment in Nova Scotia.  Annual residential investment grew 3.1 per cent in 2018, higher than the previously estimated 0.6 per cent.

Revisions to non-residential building construction were smaller over the period.  Nationally, non-residential investment was revised up 0.5 per cent ($1.0 billion).  Non-residential investment in New Brunswick and Quebec was revised down (-1.3 per cent and -3.9 per cent, respectively). The largest upward revision was in Manitoba (+3.7 per cent) over the period 2015 to 2018.  Non-residential building construction spending in Nova Scotia was revised up 1.7 per cent ($37 million).

Over the period January 2015 to January 2019, there were downward revisions in most of 2017 to non-residential building investment in Nova Scotia.  Annual investment non-residential building construction grew 9.7 per cent in 2018, higher than the previously estimated 5.0 per cent.
