NOVA SCOTIA - INTERNATIONAL MERCHANDISE TRADE APRIL 2019

Year-to-Date (Jan-Apr 2019 vs. Jan-Apr 2018, customs-based, unadjusted)

In Jan-Apr 2019, Nova Scotia International Merchandise Trade Exports increased 4.6% ($80.1 million) over Jan-Apr 2018, to $1.8 billion.

YTD - By Sector

Comparing Nova Scotia's exports for Jan-Apr 2019 with the same period last year the largest dollar value increases were in Consumer Goods ($42.0 million), Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food ($25.7 million), and Motor vehicles/Parts ($23.8 million).

 

On a year-to-date basis, export values increased in

  • Machinery/Equipment by 32.9% ($12.5 million)
  • Electronics by 18.1% ($8.7 million)
  • Consumer Goods by 12.7% ($42.0 million)
  • Special Transactions by 7.3% ($1.3 million)
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food by 7% ($25.7 million)
  • Motor vehicles/Parts by 5.4% ($23.8 million)
  • Metal/Ores by 39.7% ($7.0 million),

and declined in

  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials by 4.7% ($12.7 million)
  • Metal/Mineral Products by 9.1% ($7.0 million)
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber by 6% ($7.1 million)
  • Transportation Equipment by 5.6% ($1.1 million)
  • Energy by 67.9% ($13.0 million).

 

 

 

 YTD by Province

In Jan-Apr 2019, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (16.4%) in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Apr 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 4.6% gain in merchandise trade exports.  Canada reported a 1.8% gain in merchandise trade exports over Jan-Apr 2018.

Excluding energy exports, Newfoundland and Labrador reported the highest increase (38.7%) in Non-energy exports over Jan-Apr 2018. Nova Scotia reported a 5.3% gain in Non-energy exports. Canada reported a 2.6% gain in Non-energy exports over Jan-Apr 2018.

Nova Scotia’s trade continues to diversity. 

In Nova Scotia  Jan-Apr 2019, international export trade to all countries  increased 4.6% over Jan-Apr 2018 to $1.84 billion.

In Jan-Apr 2019

  • Motor vehicles/Parts led the way with a value of $465.4 million (25% share), followed by
  • Farm, Fishing & Inter. Food with a value of $390.7 million (21% share),
  • Consumer Goods with a value of $372.9 million (20% share),
  • Forestry/Building/Packaging Materials with a value of $254.6 million (14% share),
  • Chemical, plastic, rubber with a value of $111.1 million (6% share),
  • Metal/Mineral Products with a value of $69.6 million (4% share),
  • Electronics with a value of $56.9 million (3% share),
  • Machinery/Equipment with a value of $50.6 million (3% share),
  • Metal/Ores with a value of $24.5 million (1% share),
  • Transportation Equipment with a value of $18.9 million (1% share),
  • Special Transactions with a value of $18.8 million (1% share), and,
  • Energy with a value of $6.1 million (0.3% share).

 

 

In the period Jan-Apr 2018 vs Jan-Apr 2019, year-to-date export trade to the United States increased 4.9% ($56.0 million) to $1.2 billion. The United States share of total Nova Scotia exports was 65.5%.

 

Year-to-date export trade to China increased 31.8% ($69.2 million) to $286.4 million. China share of total Nova Scotia exports was 15.6%.

 

Year-to-date export trade to Other Major Asia countries (including Japan up $3.0 million to $22.3 million;  South Korea up $5.2 million to $34.0 million; Hong Kong down $8.2 million to $9.8 million; India down $1.4 million to $10.3 million; Taiwan down -$1.9 million to $4.1 million;  Indonesia down $14.6 million   to $3.6 million;  Singapore up $2.27 million   to $9.2 million) together decreased 14.4% ($15.7 million) to $93.3 million. Other Major Asian share of total Nova Scotia exports was 5.1%.

Year-to-date export trade to Europe countries (including  United Kingdom up $3.9 million   to $28.7 million;  Germany up $7.8 million   to $19.6 million;  Italy up $1.0 million   to $3.9 million;  France up $3.8 million   to $23.0 million;  Netherlands down $11.4 million to $20.4 million;  Belgium up $3.5 million   to $13.1 million;  Spain down $2.6 million   to $10.8 million)  together decreased 5.2% ($5.9 million) to $119.6 million. Major European countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 6.5%

Year-to-date export trade to Other countries  (including Australia down -$11.4 million   to $4.7 million; Brazil down -$2.2 million   to $2.9 million; Iraq up $0.8 million   to $2.5 million; Mexico down -$9.6 million   to $19.1 million; Norway up $1.1 million   to $6.4 million; Peru down -$0.3 million   to $0.18 million; Russian Federation down -$1.3 million   to $0.9 million; Switzerland up $0.5 million   to $3.0 million; Saudi Arabia down -$1.0 million   to $0.2 million; Turkey down -$3.2 million   to $4.2 million; Residual down -$8.6 million   to $91.9 million)  together decreased 20.6% ($35.2 million) to $135.9 million.  Other countries share of total Nova Scotia exports was 7.4%
