US CONSUMER PRICE INDEX, MAY 2019

The US Consumer Price Index (all urban consumers, seasonally adjusted) was up 0.1 per cent in May, generating year-over-year inflation of 1.8 per cent.  US inflation has rebounded after slowing in January and February.

Volatile energy prices account for much of the variation in US inflation.  In May, year-over-year energy price inflation turned negative at -0.5 per cent. Over the same time period, food price inflation and inflation for all items outside food and energy were both at 2.0 per cent.

US inflation (year-over-year) was similar to price growth observed in Canada and Nova Scotia throughout much of 2018. Inflation in Nova Scotia has been slower so far in 2019 compared to the US and Canada.
